Russian FM urges Europe to adopt Trump’s view on Russia
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has urged European leaders to adopt former U.S. President Donald Trump’s more conciliatory approach to Russia. Speaking at a press conference in Moscow following a meeting with Mozambique’s Foreign Minister Maria Lucas, Lavrov criticized recent statements from European officials, labeling them as “deeply concerning” and accusing them of fueling hostility.
Lavrov claimed that Europe’s actions are emboldening Ukraine to persist with attacks on Russian civilians and infrastructure. He asserted that Russia would continue to respond firmly and pursue its objectives, despite the EU’s efforts—through support for Kyiv—to undermine Moscow.
He expressed hope that Europe would take note of what he described as the Trump administration’s more rational and dialogue-oriented stance, which contrasts with the Biden administration’s alignment with aggressive European policies.
Lavrov’s comments followed inflammatory statements from Western military officials, including Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who recently said German troops must be prepared to “kill Russian soldiers” if NATO is threatened. Additionally, U.S. Army Europe and Africa Commander Christopher Donahue raised the possibility of a preemptive strike on Russia’s Kaliningrad region.
Meanwhile, Mozambique’s Foreign Minister Maria Lucas voiced support for the upcoming Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Istanbul, expressing hope for a balanced outcome. She praised Russia’s resilience in the face of sanctions and reiterated Mozambique’s preference for a negotiated settlement to the conflict, which she noted is negatively impacting global food security—particularly in Africa.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the talks are set for Wednesday, with the Kremlin also expressing optimism that negotiations will proceed this week.
