EU Rolls Out Far-Reaching Cybersecurity Package

(MENAFN) The European Commission on Tuesday rolled out a far-reaching cybersecurity package designed to harden the European Union against "growing cyber and hybrid threats" aimed at vital infrastructure and democratic systems.

At the center of the proposal is a revamped Cybersecurity Act, intended to reinforce the security of the EU’s information and communication technology supply chains. The updated rules focus in particular on vulnerabilities linked to third-country vendors that present cybersecurity risks.

Under the revised framework, EU institutions and national governments would apply "a harmonized, proportionate, and risk-based" approach to detecting and reducing exposure across 18 strategically important sectors.

"In today's geopolitical landscape, supply chain security is no longer just about technical product or service security, but also about risks related to a supplier, particularly dependencies and foreign interference," the commission said.

The initiative also lays the groundwork for compulsory derisking of European mobile networks from suppliers deemed high risk, expanding on safeguards already established through the EU’s 5G security toolbox.

Once endorsed by the European Parliament and the EU Council, the updated Cybersecurity Act would enter into force immediately, the European Commission said.
