Minister for Foreign Affairs takes part in EU Foreign Affairs Council

SWEDEN, January 29 - Published

Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard is taking part in the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 29 January 2026. The agenda includes Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and the situations in the Middle East and the Great Lakes Region.

“Russia shows no desire for peace. The EU must continue to exert pressure on Russia and support Ukraine. We want to see the swift adoption of the 20th sanctions package, which should include a full maritime services ban, stricter measures against Russian fertiliser exports and a total ban on exports of luxury goods,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.

At the Council, the foreign ministers will also discuss how the EU can continue to help implement the peace plan in Gaza. In addition, the conflict in the Great Lakes Region and EU support to ongoing mediation processes will be discussed.

“With regard to Iran, we need to increase the pressure on the regime and clearly demonstrate that the violent repression of political rights and freedoms is unacceptable. I welcome new additions to the sanctions lists, and I would like to see the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps added to the EU terrorist list,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.

The EU foreign ministers will also have informal discussions with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
