Poland Deputy PM Weighs In on Trumps NATO Exit

(MENAFN) Polish Deputy Prime Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz issued a pointed defense of transatlantic unity on Wednesday, declaring: "There is no NATO without the United States, but there is also no American power without NATO."

The remarks came in direct response to mounting speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump may withdraw America from the alliance. Trump stoked those fears in an interview published Wednesday by a British newspaper, in which he described NATO as a "paper tiger" and confirmed he is seriously considering pulling the United States out of the bloc entirely.

Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as Poland's defense minister, pushed back firmly, insisting: "We must strive to preserve this alliance because it is the guarantee of our security."

On the question of Poland's Patriot air defense systems — amid reports that Washington had been exploring the possibility of redirecting the equipment to the Middle East — the minister was unequivocal, affirming that the systems would remain on Polish soil. He stressed that the role of Poland's Patriots is to defend the country's airspace and NATO's eastern flank.

Looking beyond the transatlantic relationship, Kosiniak-Kamysz urged Europe to accelerate the development of its own independent defense capabilities, placing particular emphasis on the European Union's SAFE program as a vehicle for achieving that goal.

Despite the friction generated by Trump's incendiary remarks, the minister urged Warsaw to stay the course, emphasizing that Poland should continue to build transatlantic relations and strengthen security in the EU and Europe, "while also withstanding the emotional tensions linked to the statements."
